A well-known community hardware store needed to respond to developments along Santa Monica Boulevard, a major commercial thoroughfare in West Hollywood. The City program widened sidewalks and encouraged store owners to engage the pedestrian and sidewalk environment. The design for Koontz Hardware includes a weather enclosure for an outdoor display area, effectively moving the store's entry up to the public sidewalk while enclosing the outdoor display area to meet zoning regulations. Weaving around rectilinear walls and exposed columns, the distinctive curving storefront design enhances the commercial display and connects the store to sidewalk activity.
